Why nurses use it

Gravity IV infusions require setting drops per minute when no pump is used. Nurses calculate gtt/min from volume, time, and the tubing drop factor so the infusion finishes on schedule.

When to use it

Use for manual (gravity) IV sets when programming mL/hr on a pump is not available. Re-count drops after starting the infusion.

How to use this calculator

  1. Confirm total volume to infuse (mL) and ordered duration.
  2. Convert duration to minutes if needed.
  3. Select the drop factor printed on the IV tubing package (10, 15, 20, or 60 gtt/mL).
  4. Set the roller clamp and count drops for one minute to verify.

How the calculation works

gtt/min = (Volume × Drop factor) ÷ Time in minutes. The drop factor tells you how many drops equal one millilitre for that tubing.

gtt/min = (Volume × Drop factor) ÷ Time (min)

Formula used by this tool — verify units before applying at the bedside.

Worked example

1000 mL over 8 h (480 min), 20 gtt/mL set: (1000 × 20) ÷ 480 = 42 gtt/min.

Limitations & clinical notes

  • Gravity drip rates are approximate — verify with drop count.
  • Pump infusions should use mL/hr programming instead.
