NCLEX-RN vs NCLEX-PN: Exam Differences & Which to Take
Compare the two US nursing licensure exams — who qualifies, what each tests, registration steps, and how to prepare for NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN.

What is the NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-RN is the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses. US state boards use it to determine whether ADN, BSN, or diploma graduates are ready for entry-level RN practice. The exam uses computerized adaptive testing and emphasizes clinical judgment, safety, and the NCSBN test plan categories including management of care and pharmacological therapies.
After your state board declares you eligible, you register through Pearson VUE, receive an Authorization to Test (ATT), and schedule your exam date.
The current RN and PN test plans are the 2026 NCLEX test plans, effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2029. Review the latest plan on the official NCLEX test plans page before studying.
NCLEX-RN content focus
The RN test plan emphasizes management of care, safety, pharmacological therapies, reduction of risk potential, and physiological and psychosocial adaptation. Questions often test clinical judgment, prioritization, and delegation within RN scope.
What is the NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-PN is for graduates of state-approved practical or vocational nursing programs. It assesses entry-level LPN/LVN competence — basic care, data collection, and coordinated care under RN or physician direction. Like the RN exam, it is a CAT delivered at Pearson VUE testing centers.
NCLEX-PN content focus
The PN test plan emphasizes coordinated care under supervision, safety, basic care and comfort, pharmacological therapies within LPN scope, and data collection. Management and delegation questions reflect the LPN’s supervised role.
You cannot choose NCLEX-PN if you completed an RN program, or NCLEX-RN if you completed an LPN program — your exam matches your education pathway.
Eligibility: who takes which exam?
- NCLEX-RN: Graduates of ADN, BSN, or diploma nursing programs applying for RN licensure
- NCLEX-PN: Graduates of state-approved practical or vocational nursing programs applying for LPN/LVN licensure
- Both exams: Require board eligibility, Pearson VUE registration, and a valid ATT before scheduling
You cannot hold RN and LPN licenses from the same exam sitting — each license requires the matching program and exam. LPN-to-RN bridge graduates take NCLEX-RN after completing ADN requirements.
Can you take both NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN?
Not for the same licensure goal. Each exam matches a specific program type. A nurse may hold both licenses over a career (for example, LPN first, then LPN-to-RN bridge and NCLEX-RN), but each requires completing the appropriate state-approved program and passing the corresponding exam.

❓ FAQ
Is NCLEX-RN harder than NCLEX-PN?
Both exams use computerized adaptive testing and test entry-level competence for different scopes. Difficulty depends on your program preparation, not a fixed question count.
How do I register for the NCLEX?
Apply to your state board first. After eligibility is confirmed, register with Pearson VUE, pay the fee, and receive your ATT before scheduling.
Which exam do LPN-to-RN bridge graduates take?
NCLEX-RN — after completing an ADN or equivalent bridge program and receiving board approval.
