Understanding Environmental Health
Environmental conditions are illnesses or injuries caused or worsened by physical, chemical, or biological factors in the environment. Heat-related illness (heat exhaustion, heat stroke) results from failed thermoregulation in hot settings; cold injury (hypothermia, frostbite) from prolonged cold exposure. Dehydration and sunburn are common in outdoor and occupational settings. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of unintentional poisoning; altitude illness affects people ascending to high altitude. Drowning and near-drowning are environmental emergencies. Bites and stings (insects, snakes, marine life) and plant dermatitis (e.g. poison ivy) are also managed as environmental presentations.
Assessment focuses on exposure history, vital signs (core temp when relevant), and targeted investigations (e.g. carboxyhaemoglobin for CO, electrolytes for heat illness). First aid and removal from exposure are key; heat stroke and severe hypothermia require urgent cooling or rewarming. Early recognition and evidence-based management improve outcomes.

Heat stroke is a medical emergencyβrapid cooling saves lives. For CO poisoning, high-flow oxygen and consider hyperbaric oxygen in selected cases. In hypothermia, handle gently to avoid ventricular fibrillation; active rewarming per guidelines. For snake bite, immobilise and seek antivenom; do not cut or suck the wound.
