Fetal fraction is the proportion of cell-free DNA in maternal blood that comes from the placenta/fetus. If it is below the laboratory threshold, the test may return no-call and need repeat sampling or alternate screening per protocol.

Does NIPT replace the quad screen or ultrasound?

Not entirely. NIPT primarily addresses common aneuploidy risk. Neural tube defect screening, some structural assessments, and other prenatal pathways may still apply per obstetric plan.

When should nurses escalate NIPT-related concerns?

Escalate according to facility policy for uncommunicated high-risk or no-call results, patients making major decisions without counseling, and acute obstetric symptoms such as bleeding, severe pain, or decreased fetal movement when movement is expected.
