What Is Swelling?

Swelling means enlargement of a body area from fluid in the tissues (often called edema), inflammation, bleeding, joint effusion, or other mass effect. Patients may say “puffy,” “tight,” “bloated,” or “filled with fluid.” What feels like one complaint can represent very different mechanisms—from benign dependent pooling to airway-compromising angioedema—so pattern and trajectory matter as much as the word itself.
