Why nurses use it
Gravity IV infusions require setting drops per minute when no pump is used. Nurses calculate gtt/min from volume, time, and the tubing drop factor so the infusion finishes on schedule.
When to use it
Use for manual (gravity) IV sets when programming mL/hr on a pump is not available. Re-count drops after starting the infusion.

How to use this calculator
- Confirm total volume to infuse (mL) and ordered duration.
- Convert duration to minutes if needed.
- Select the drop factor printed on the IV tubing package (10, 15, 20, or 60 gtt/mL).
- Set the roller clamp and count drops for one minute to verify.
How the calculation works
gtt/min = (Volume × Drop factor) ÷ Time in minutes. The drop factor tells you how many drops equal one millilitre for that tubing.
