Why nurses use it

Hyperglycaemia pulls water into the vascular space and lowers measured sodium. Corrected sodium estimates what the sodium would be if glucose were normal — important in DKA and HHS interpretation.

Use when glucose is markedly elevated and you are interpreting sodium trends during DKA/HHS management.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter measured sodium and serum glucose.
  2. Select correction factor (1.6 or 2.4) per local protocol.
  3. Use corrected sodium alongside osmolality, ketones, and fluid plans.

How the calculation works

Corrected Na ≈ Measured Na + factor × [(glucose − 100) ÷ 100]. Factor 1.6 is common; some protocols use 2.4 for extreme hyperglycaemia.

Corrected Na ≈ Measured Na + 1.6 × [(glucose − 100) ÷ 100]

Worked example

Na 130, glucose 400: 130 + 1.6×[(400−100)/100] = 134.8 mEq/L.

Limitations & clinical notes

  • Formulas vary (1.6 vs 2.4 correction factor).
  • Clinical management of DKA/HHS requires serial labs and protocol-driven correction.
