Why nurses use it

When IV tubing is changed, the drop factor (gtt/mL) changes. Nurses convert between mL/hr (pump rate) and gtt/min (gravity counting) to maintain the same delivery speed.

When to use it

Use when switching between macrodrip and microdrip sets or when verifying gravity flow against a previous pump rate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select conversion direction (mL/hr → gtt/min or reverse).
  2. Enter the known rate and correct drop factor from tubing packaging.
  3. Verify by counting drops for one minute.

How the calculation works

gtt/min = (mL/hr × drop factor) ÷ 60. Reverse: mL/hr = (gtt/min × 60) ÷ drop factor.

gtt/min = (mL/hr × drop factor) ÷ 60

Formula used by this tool — verify units before applying at the bedside.

Worked example

125 mL/hr with 20 gtt/mL set: (125×20)÷60 = 42 gtt/min.

Limitations & clinical notes

  • Microdrip (60 gtt/mL) vs macrodrip sets must match selection.
  • Pump rates should be verified independently.
