The Parkland formula estimates 24-hour crystalloid needs for major thermal burns: 4 mL × kg × % TBSA. It gives a starting point for resuscitation before titration to urine output and haemodynamics.
When to use it
Use in major burn resuscitation after TBSA is estimated — always follow burn centre or local burn protocol.

How to use this calculator
- Enter weight and % TBSA (from Rule of Nines or palm method).
- Enter hours since burn if the patient presents after injury — the calculator shows remaining first-8-hour volume.
- Titrate to urine output (e.g. 0.5 mL/kg/hr targets per protocol).
How the calculation works
Total 24h = 4 × weight (kg) × % TBSA. Half is given in the first 8 hours from burn time; remainder over the next 16 hours. If hours since burn > 0, remaining first-8h volume is prorated over the time left in that window.
