Overdose, toxicity, and antidote

Significant naproxen overdosage may cause lethargy, dizziness, drowsiness, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, transient liver function changes, hypoprothrombinemia, renal dysfunction, or metabolic acidosis per labeling. Is naproxen safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Avoid naproxen in late pregnancy because NSAIDs may cause premature closure of the ductus arteriosus per labeling (Pregnancy Category C). Naproxen is detected in breast milk at low levels; labeling recommends avoiding use in nursing mothers. LactMed notes low milk levels but prefers shorter half-life NSAIDs for newborns and preterm infants when alternatives exist.

What is the treatment for naproxen overdose?

There is no specific antidote per labeling. Provide symptomatic and supportive care; consider emesis or activated charcoal within about 4 hours of symptomatic ingestion. Hemodialysis is unlikely to lower naproxen levels significantly because of protein binding. Monitor airway, GI bleeding, and renal function. Contact local poison control or medical toxicology services per facility protocol.
