Testing may be unreliable or not performed with low platelet count, low hematocrit, clotted or underfilled tubes, line or butterfly draws per policy, or delivery beyond the whole-blood stability window โ€” thresholds vary by laboratory per RCPA and manufacturer guidance.

Can PFA monitor clopidogrel therapy?

Reviewed laboratory medicine references state PFA-100 has variable and often poor sensitivity to clopidogrel and other P2Y12 inhibitors โ€” it should not be used alone to confirm or rule out P2Y12 blockade.

When should nurses escalate before PFA results return?

Escalate according to facility policy for active bleeding, large hematoma, hemodynamic change, or procedure scheduling when symptoms suggest significant bleeding risk โ€” do not delay clinical care waiting for closure times.
