What Is Leg Pain?
Leg pain is discomfort, aching, tightness, cramping, or sharp pain perceived in the hip, thigh, knee, calf, shin, ankle, or foot. It may follow trauma, overuse, joint degeneration, nerve compression or radiculopathy, infection, or reflect vascular compromise in the arterial or venous systems.
Because leg symptoms overlap among musculoskeletal, venous thromboembolic, arterial, and radicular causes, nurses compare both legs, clarify walking tolerance, and watch for cardiopulmonary features. Calf or thigh pain with unilateral swelling may be associated with deep vein thrombosis; dyspnea or pleuritic chest pain with leg findings raises concern for pulmonary embolism until evaluated.
